Independent Study:
Telling Stories in the 21st Century

What does it mean to tell stories here and now? What kinds of stories are we telling? Why are we telling them? How are we telling them?

The purpose of your Independent Study is to consider the answer to these questions and others as you explore a story of our time, a story told through film.

film-list

Trailers for most of the movies can be found here

The films on this list are all considered to be postmodern in some way- either because of the stories they tell, or the way they tell them or a combination of both. They also explore themes we have visited and revisited in our course.

Part 1: Choose a film from the list. by: December 2, 2008
Watch the film. by Dec 7, 2008

Part 2: Conference with Ms. Parrish to develop a research plan
Dec 8 -12
*watch the film*

Part 3: Using the advice given to you in your conference, locate secondary source material on 5 different aspects of your film

-    genre*** (required)
-    postmodern film *** required
-    director
-    cast
-    sound
-    setting
-    historical background (if relevant)
-    themes
-    images
-    etc.
-

and … Create an annotated bibliography of this material.
This should be one – two pages long, maximum, and should contain your sources, properly documented with MLA formatting, and a brief summary.
- due January 6

Part 4: watch, watch, watch. Take notes, as you do, on the style and content of the film. Familiarize yourself with the language of film. Ask for help. Ask questions. These notes will be evaluated for thoroughness & demonstration of understanding of content and style.
(ongoing) – due January 7 or 12 (you earn the 2nd due date)

Part 5: Director’s Commentary

Choose an 8 – 10 minute section of your film or video game or television series and write a “director’s commentary” for it. Your commentary should mention specific film/animation techniques from your media work, but, as with the Hamlet assignment, should be directed towards communicating what is both thematically important about the scene you’ve chosen, and how it is an example of contemporary (postmodern) story telling.

This commentary should not be a formal piece of writing (which doesn’t mean you don’t put effort into it.) Imagine you are the director of the media work. What kind of person do you imagine him to be? How would she talk?  Length 1000-1200 words.

- due Jan 19-21, your choice.

Evaluation:

Term Marks
Conference:         20 marks, Media Studies

Bibliography:        20 marks, Writing/Media Studies

Notes:            40 marks, Media Studies

Summative Mark

Director’s Commentary     40 Marks- writing, media studies
= 10 % of summative
