common themes 2

October 6th, 2008 by parrishka

Child innocence
- Araby: the main characters love for the girl
- Stolen Party: the main girl`s dream to be rich
-realizes things about himself

How society affects a child’s life?
-takes a village to raise a child
-society ends up shaping how children perceive the world

How  parent effects their children
- ex: if a parent yells at their children, children, when they grow up will yell at their children - a “cycle” in behaviour

-not many positive role models; lack of communication between adults and their children
-not much equality between people; kids are not at the same level of adults (different status, hierarchy)

Each main character had a sense of isolation

(ex: VFAHL: Dylan was a ‘white boy’, Araby: not intercting with his friends…)
- growth of the protagonist and their understanding of the world
- based on labels

Possession / Ownership
- the is a possession to someone

(ex:

- Stolen Party: Senora Ines owns the little girl
- Araby: boy wants to be the girl`s possession, and vice versa
- VFAHL: mom and the outside parties hold possession over the son, marking of territory
- Dolls House:

New Statement: All stories hold an idea of ownership over an important object
- The poer to control who belongs and who doesn’t
