Ophelia’s Progression in Film

December 16th, 2008 by Tasnia

Ophelia, although portrayed differently in film versions, has remained a significant character in all of them.  The following link is of a video on youtube called Ophelia: The Evolution.  This video, through short clips, provides a brief understanding of the Ophelias filmed through the ages.  The adaptations of Ophelia’s role (in this video) can be seen through actresses Kate Winslet, Helena Bonham, and Julia Stiles. This video would prove beneficial to our study of Hamlet as it identifies different characteristics in the variations of Ophelia.    Through this digital resource, we see the conventional Shakespearean Ophelia with the Renaissance ideology, and the unconventional one in post-modern times.

Women as Hamlet Tony Howard

December 15th, 2008 by Gul

Hamlets we’ve seen so far have all been a man. What if they were women?  What if women played their roles? In this Podcast of University of Warwick Tony Howard, author of Women as Hamlet, is interviewed. He talk about why are women being attracted to the role of Hamlet. The podcast reveals some interesting characteristics of Hamlet and how they are played by the women. This will help us understand the character of Hamlet and be able to observe in the opposite point of view. As it also talks about the issue of power and class, it relates to our class subject. Listen to it you’ll know what I mean.

Hamlet: Ethan Hawke & Michael Almereyda Interview

December 14th, 2008 by Humayra

Ethan Hawke plays Hamlet in Michael Almereyda’s post-modern version of Hamlet. Surprisingly, both Ethan Hawke and Michael Almereyda did an interview together for this version of “Hamlet”. In this source, both Ethan Hawke and Michael Almereyda give their inputs towards the movie. They discuss their views on Hamlet, on work and family life, on literature, on the music and contemporary interpretations of Hamlet from their perspective. This information is very useful for our film study as we get a better perspective of the protagonist and director and their visions towards the character of Hamlet and recreating the famous Shakespearean play. This information that Almereyda and Ethan Hawke provide us are very helpful to give new insight on a personal level of how they felt about the concept of this post-modern version of “Hamlet”. I personally found it very interesting to see the many differences pointed out between the on and off screen attitudes of Hawke and Almereyda.

Hamlet: Ethan Hawke

December 14th, 2008 by Shraddha

Ethan Hawke plays Hamlet in Michael Almereyda’s version of Hamlet. Interestingly, I found Ethan Hawke’s interview. The majority of the conversation is on Hamlet. Hawke talks about different adaptations of Hamlet and which one entertains him the most.  In the interview, he converses his favourites, and mainly, his reactions for Hamlet. He states that he and Michael Almereyda are best friends and he also talks about why Almereyda chose him as Hamlet in the film. What I found appealing about Hawke is along with an actor, he is a novel writer. In his interview, he claims that people heat up on him on the novels he writes. I think the interview with Ethan Hawke will be helpful for our study of Hamlet because we will gain the knowledge of our main character. We will deepen our understanding of why Almereyda chose the cast in the film, specifically Hamlet. In addition to that, we will know Hawke’s audience as mentioned in the interview. It will also influence us to see Hawke’s perspective.
