Ms. Jack
Here is an example of an artist’s statement that I wrote for my painting “Pearl Earring”. Note how I used terminology from the Principles and Elements of Design.
“Pearl Earring”
“Pearl Earring” is a painting done in acrylic on canvas and was inspired by Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. When viewing Vermeer’s work, I was inspired by his use of chiaroscuro, a common style applied by Renaissance artists in which light and shadows are explored and used to define dimensions in the figure or object without using line. This is an element I chose to emphasize in my own work. I feel it is my own modern rendition of the exploration of value. I shone a bright light on my face, with the intent to create dramatic shadows, contrasting the light and dark and using them to emphasize form. This use of light elongated and “elegantized” my neck and chin, sensualizing them and drawing out the depths of form not normally seen in regular lighting.
Vanity is the only word I can think of that accurately describes my relationship to art. Painting has always facilitated a deep rooted fascination with my body. There is, however, a sense of dissonance that I have always felt, that while I am immersed in replicating my own image, I have always felt distant from art and what it means to define oneself as an artist. Thusly, in my paintings, I choose to replicate only parts of my body. This way I am unidentifiable in my paintings and remain anonymous. I have also always felt that through art we discover different aspects of the self; spiritually, emotionally, physically. “Pearl Earring” is an expression of my discord with defining oneself as an artists, my own fascination with my body and a means of searching for personal meaning through replicating my body on canvas.
In your own artist’s statements try to use at least three of the terms from your handout.

Short Fiction Finale:
As we’ve seen, new social, political, and technological realities give birth to new kinds of stories. Let’s look at some more examples and yak with each other about what this might mean for us as a society, as human beings who turn to stories to help them make sense of the world.
On the website, go to the categories marked:
whose stories
how stories
why stories
In each of these categories, you will find posts. Choose a post that interests you. Follow the instructions. Then, in the comments field, have a discussion with some other members of the class about how the content in the post sheds light on whose stories get told, how stories get told, or why stories get told.
Complete by Monday, 10 pm.

Here are a couple of examples I did of a poster if I was studying Seasons of Life, and the Doll’s House as my story.
Note:
The quotations come from the preface.
The pictures are meant to illustrate how the story I’m studying is an example of what the anthology is trying to achieve as stated in the preface. For example, I chose the second picture because the bright colours felt like the imaginative world of children that the quotation talks about.
Self-evaluation:
content- These pictures are o-kay, but they seem a little too peaceful and positive to really represent the Doll’s House. I do like how they show the intimacy that little girls share. And the time period works too.
Design- I really tried to make sure that the words were clearly visible against the background, so I used that transparent block to lighten the space behind the words. It’s a little clunky, but so much better than if the words couldn’t be read. I also liked breaking up the quotation to create a visual rhythm to match the rhythm of the sentence. If I was being marked on this, I would definitely make sure that I didn’t have to hyphenate the words like I did. It looks so awkard, doesn’t it? It gets the kind of attention you don’t want.

Write your make-up answer to the foil question here.
Discuss how two characters from any of the stories we have read are foils for each other. (the characters must be from the same story). If someone has already discussed the characters you wanted to write about, you can still talk about them, but bring some new insights to the discussion.

Here are links to the sound files for our discussion. Please save them to your computer and listen to them rather than listen to them on the site so it doesn’t crash.
